Welcome to Bigger Skies Mental Health
When something upsetting occurs, it's stored in the brain in a way that makes our system feel like the event could happen again soon or is currently happening. If a similar event occurs or has elements that remind the brain of the upsetting event, the brain reacts as though the original event is recurring.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) helps shift the storage of these memories to a more functional part of the brain, where the event can be experienced as truly in the past.
EMDR isn’t just for trauma—it’s a versatile therapy that can help with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, phobias, relationship issues, insomnia, nightmares, and more. By helping reframe negative beliefs and emotions, EMDR supports healing and emotional growth for a variety of challenges, not just past trauma.
EMDR brings about a physical change. Events that previously triggered an exaggerated response from the brain no longer do so. EMDR allows the person to respond to the present without interference from the past in a more adaptable way.
